Charles I (1625-1649), Exeter mint, Crown, 1645, mm. castle, crowned figure of king on horseback l., holding sword, sash flies out in two ends, rev. garnished round shield with colon stops either side of mint-mark (S 3062; N 2561; Besly D23;  Brooker – ; FRC 130)

Struck on a broad flan with the characteristics associated most Exeter crowns, this particular specimen has an abundance of eye appeal and would grade as by English standards as Very Fine. 1 of only 9 known specimens to exist of this very rare die variety (D23) and a type not represented in J G Brooker’s Sylloge.
